Kirehe Students Trained to Lead the Fight Against Gender-Based Violence in Schools

With the support of the Imbuto Foundation, Vision Jeunesse Nouvelle conducted a 2-day training in Kirehe District for students and school discipline leaders, equipping them to establish Gender-Based Violence (GBV) clubs and lead awareness efforts within their own school communities. Empowering Peer Leaders Rather than relying solely on adults to drive awareness, this training placed the responsibility — and the tools — directly in the hands of students and discipline leaders who are already trusted voices within their schools. Over the course of two days, participants gained the knowledge and skills needed to: Establish GBV clubs within their schools, creating structured, ongoing spaces for awareness and support Share awareness messages with their peers, using language and approaches that resonate with fellow students Recognize and respond appropriately to issues related to gender-based violence within their school environment Why Peer-Led Awareness Matters Students often listen most closely to their peers. By training discipline leaders and student representatives directly, this initiative builds a sustainable, peer-driven model for awareness — one that continues long after the training itself ends, as newly equipped leaders carry these messages into their daily interactions with classmates. This approach contributes directly to safer and more informed school communities, where students feel empowered to speak up, support one another, and challenge harmful behaviors and attitudes. A Partnership for Safer Schools This training was made possible through the continued support of the Imbuto Foundation, whose partnership with Vision Jeunesse Nouvelle reflects a shared commitment to protecting young people and building safer, healthier school environments across Rwanda. Looking Ahead As the newly trained student leaders return to their schools to establish GBV clubs and begin sharing awareness messages with their peers, we look forward to seeing these clubs grow into lasting platforms for dialogue, support, and protection within their school communities.
